Hey if anyone would like to talk about the newest Star War movie I would love a interesting discussion. As the title says spoilers are okay
The way Finn and the other troopers ran you could really think it possible. As for the movie the 3D and special effects were great, but in generall due to the awful plot I think it was the worst Star Wars movie ever. Rather low jokes about previous Star Wars movies...ok...but Han sumarized it all to well, when he said that everything remembered him of previous events: Some country bumpkin in posession of important data, a small force of rebels fighting for the good, largely outnumbered by the bad guys who are in posession of an enormous weapon that can obliterate everything, one of the bad guys related to the good guys... Sorry to say, but that's exactly the plot of Episode IV... as if the books hadn't offered thousands of better plots for a movie... But no - better copy an old Episode and discard all the carefully created background built over years in books, comics etc....
Now that you bring that up I agree that the plot is very thin and definitely rips off IV. I think JJ was trying to make parallels to the original trilogy but took too much, maybe cutting or changing the more eye rolling scenes ( like the Jedi mind trick ) would have made it stand on its own more. All in all I enjoyed it and I think we can agree that it is miles better than episodes I-III.
Yeah, the fact that it was a re-hash of A New Hope was a pretty big letdown. They had a really colorful Extended Universe to pick and choose from, but they went with that? I already had the plot spoiled to me since I didn't want to see the movie, expecting it to be pretty lousy. It may have been better than Episodes I-III, but that's like saying any president was better than James Buchanan.
i defiantly see your point, I hope this does not turn into the theme of this story ark. Maybe this was to get things rolling and Episode VIII will diverge and be its own thing
I thought it was entertaining. Let's not forget, it's a swashbuckling sci-fi adventure and on that level, it really succeed. In preparation, I re-watched the first three films and was surprised how badly they've dated (more in terms of hammy dialogue and script than fx, etc). It also felt far more inclusive than the originals, with a good range of female characters. And they totally knew what they were doing with Captain Phasma: "Present your blaster for inspection..."
I understand that the plot is not meant to be groundbreaking and thought provoking, but I figured that Abrams would do something more interesting.
Don't care about the parallels between it and A New Hope. It was an awesome movie. And my mom loves Harrison Ford, so it is a given that she loved it too. My Wife did as well.
I quite liked the parallels between the original movie and this. The thing that ruined it was when Ben removed his helmet, he just looked and sounded like a spoilt fop brat. Oh, and Gollum, supreme leader, was a bit of a shock! It did feel like a bit of a rehash though at times, flying the Falcon inside the crashed star cruiser, having to get a shot off in a particular part of the Death Star to blow it up, Etc etc. at least Ben knew who his father was.
