@Tom Allen found a saddle that works for him. He did quite a bit of trial and error.

I’ve had zero luck. In fact I think I injured myself riding while caged. The base ring pushed into my prostate on my 15 mile each way commute, and I got an infection. On another occasion it was 28 degrees Fahrenheit and my exposed balls were so cold they turned odd colors. Usually they retreat up into my body when cycling below 70 degrees. Couldn’t do that with the base ring obviously.

It’s a pain to unlock and lock two times a day. And I can tell my little guy enjoys the temporary freedom when commuting because I can go much longer in a string of days caged without feeling like I need a release from the cage (when commuting), as compared to staying caged 24/7 for a week or two. I’m a head case after 2 weeks continuous but easy peasy with a break throughout the week to ride bicycle.

Cycling is the only thing in my life that conflicts with constant caging. It’s a real frustration for me.

    Sorry to ramble.

I have one on my nice road bike, and a similar one on my old steel road bike. I would buy a third, but then I'd have to remove the nice Italian leather saddle from my touring bike, and I don't want to do that.

Nice! 3 road bikes! That reminds me of the question: how many bikes does a man need? Answer: X + 1 (X is the # of bikes he already has.)

How far / long do you typically ride when you take out your touring bike?

I have an alloy road bike that I use for more serious exercise. Typically I'm riding 20 to 50 miles. I am not locked, because even with a cutout saddle, it's not comfortable, and I spend too much time adjusting myself.

The steel bike is an old 1980s rebuild that I use for riding the local bike trail with the lads. That's usually only 10 miles, with stops at the brewpubs along the way. I'm not unlocked for those trips.

I have an aluminum frame touring bike that I found in a consignment shop and fixed up. That one still has the classic 1980s look, and it's more of a "taken out on nice summer days" kind of bike. I rarely do more than 30 miles at a clip on that one.

Edit: And then, there's my hardtail mountain bike that I put street tires on so I can go on the gravel trails...

I have managed to be pretty comfortable riding for regular commuting rides. Over 20 or so miles and it can be hit and miss. Ridden up to 50mi caged but the last 10 or so were very uncomfortable. It was also in the 30s Fahrenheit. Below 40 it seems to be tougher to keep things from trying to retreat. And they can’t…

Unlocked is preferred so I can just enjoy riding and not worry about the adjustments.

we need to ask GCN to do a comparison of steel v aluminium v titanium v carbon framed road bikes and their transmission of road vibration up into a cock cage, i think?

My bike is in the back of the shed covered in dust and has flat tires.

I've started riding again. I'm just unlocking in the AM and locking back up after I ride. At this point I'm doing a self lock so its pretty simple for me to have access to the keys.

I've been doing Zwift rides in my garage and getting out on the road when I can.

A lot of Vaseline but generally the cage comes of for anything over 60 miles. Generally. It's not so bad on the mountain bike with the more upright posture.

Indoors on the trainer (17-34miles; 1-2 hours), remain caged. Any distance outside uncaged for safety concerns. Ride on a Fizik Tempo Argo R3 saddle.
Just added a new album “cycling” if interested
