Really depends on the paddle, some are soft leather, some are perspex or even metal. It spreads the strike out over a bigger area than a cane so its not the super sharp cane feel but more like a spank with a hand

A useful substitute for a paddle is a wooden chopping board, the type with a handle, they've got a bit of weight in them and quite thick. If I'm slacking in the kitchen, she'll give me a few whacks to liven me up.
