Hello, I have been looking at neosteel belts for a long time now (several years) and hope to someday purchase one. I had a question for anyone who has their belts: What are the dimensions of the supplied abus lock? I was wanting to use a different type of abus lock, but obviously it would have to fit correctly. From some of the pictures on the ns site, it appears they use the abus 45/30. I'd like to use either an abus 88/40 or the 75IB/30, which are more secure. I have unfortunately not been able to find the necessary dimensions of the 45/30 lock: shackle diameter, vertical clearance, horizonal clearance, and lock body thickness. I suspect that the 88/40 would not fit since the 40 indicates it's 10mm wider than the 45/30 model. Can any owners share this information?

What are the pros and cons of the two Neosteel lock options?

Thanks, gweny. I tried to look up the 60/30 to find the dimensions and unfortunately was unsuccessful. Did you by chance have any way to get them? As I said in my post, I'd need to know the shackle diameter, vertical clearance, horizonal clearance, and lock body thickness, either in mm or inches. Would be great if an abus 88/40 fit.

I did attempt to contact neosteel about the dimensions, but they never replied to my inquiry, unfortunately.

I don't think it would be worth their time to handle only padlocks. That's like asking a Porsche dealer to sell you seat-belts.
If you want a more secure lock does that mean you think the locks that come with a neosteel belt are not secure? I assume any lock specialist could pick the abus lock in seconds. If it's security you want have the seal bolts added and use numbered metal cable seals. What is it about the locks you are suspicious of, do they keep you chaste?

Indeed, I don't expect them (neosteel) to sell other locks than the basic pin tumbler one provided. I would get it elsewhere. I would just want one "more" secure than the default provided. Perhaps it's not an issue, but it seemed "better" to get a more secure model lock (provided it fit of course, which is why I'm trying to find the measurements of the default abus one) and use that one instead. I guess it's for peace of mind or such. The 88/40 is a very secure one (disc detaining type) from what I've read, but I don't think it would fit.

You are correct about the seal bolts and such, I will keep that in mind as well.

I was looking at this same issue the other day :)

Firstly, ABUS couldn't sell Pepsi in a desert and their website is awful, here is a dealer catalogue for more info
    http://www.abusdealer.co.uk/images/ABUS _2011_Oct_Price_List_LowRes.pdf

The seal idea is nice but it doesn't add to the physical security, which is the main thought here I think.

I believe the belts that use a captive shackle can be amended by replacing the belt's pin for an alternative, either wider or deeper. A guy with a lathe should be able to manufacture something. Certainly I would prefer to see something which fully enclosed the shackle to prevent leverage, and some form of obstruction to deter lock picking.

The warded keyway is ideal for security, an alternative is a dimple style lock being slightly harder to pick than the conventional keyway.

I did find some alternatives and their dimensions for you, hth :)

The Abus 85 series has a 30 mm padlock which can be assembled with a stainless shackle.
This lock has the '5' grade for safety. (highest in the 2011 catalog for usable 30mm padlocks)
Dimensions under shackle appear similar to those mentioned above.

The 65 series scores a '4' grade for safety. The 55 series scores a '3' grade for safety.
At best, series 60 would be similar to 65 in safety.

Is the Abus 85 series still the best option, it's 2014 now?
Are there any alternatives outside of Abus?

Maybe ask Neosteel to make a larger/different shackle shroud so we can use a small Abloy padlock?
Abloy cylinders are quite different from normal cylinders, harder to pick.

From ABus I go the tip to look at the 75IB/30.
Rust free, reversible key that is `different`.
    Looks a bit like:
Just as the 85/30 it is probably 2 milimeters more thick than the 60/30.
    Would that be an issue?

If no issue: where in the Netherlands can I get this lock?

I mentioned the 75IB/30 to mr Mende.
Can anyone compare his 60/30 lock to a 75IB/30 w.r.t. the shackle?
Does the 75IB/30 fit around the shroud as does the 60/30?
If so, then we only need to add the extra pin that the Neosteel 60/30 has.

I learned today from mr Mende that the 75ib/30 appears to have a shackleheight that is 3mm higher than the 60/30 has.
Also the 75-series lock is 7 mm more in height than the 60/30, restricting bending room and reducing the free room for inserting the key.

But if we combine the 60/30 lock with the posts for the wire seal, we have a phyiscal barrier (lock) yet also a psychological barrier (seal). I proposed this to Mr Mende.

If you like this idea, please email neosteel.de....
The Seal Bolt version of the belt has posts with holes for the wire seals.
The Abus lock version of the belt does not appear to have holes in the posts besides the lock.
So if the posts are similar except for the holes then we might be in business quickly if mr Mende agrees.

If we go for the sealbolt version of the lock we can still use the Abus, I learned from Mr Neden.

Too late for me, but if you want to buy new belt you should seriously consider lock on the back of the belt (with optional d-ring on the front). Pictures could be found on the neosteel site.

IMO having the lock at the back is an excellent idea. But I can't find any pix or details of this option on the Neosteel site. Can you post the link to them?

    Thanks

Locking at the front is easier for the wearer.
For opening the lock unauthorized it does not matter as they would need a third party with lock pick skills anyways.
    My tip:
Ask for added seal bolts to your abus belt order.
That way you can lock and seal the belt.
No discussion needed at any point.

That is fine too, but prior poster (Fetish) posited the rear lock, and if one's available it's got to be an option. If Neosteel do any such them it's got to be well woth the checking out.

They have, see http://www.neosteel.de/Nseparch.htm down the page.
Did not see that option in their shop. Just email them to ask about this option. If you get an answer, plese have them post pictures of the back of this setup.

i have ordered my masterpiece arch with the padlock in the front for the following reasons:
    - i dont want to have a scratching, dangling thing in my back, which is destroying my pants slowly because of sharp edges
    - i want to be able to maintain the padlock while wearing (using silicone spray, etc.)
    - in case of emergency i want to see what i am doing, if using heavy tools

nevertheless: a clean look at the front is nice to see. but as there are no pictures of the lock in the back in the internet, i doubt that anyone has ever bought one...

So once we have our Masterpieces, can we please look into alternative locks?
More secure locks are welcome if they fit without needing to change the belt components.
The 75ib/30 looks to be out but I will test it anyways when all things get here.
