Ok does anyone else agree with me that that was truly an astoundingly awesome movie?!
Once again THERE WILL BE SPOILERS. I created this thread to discuss what we all thought about the movie. STOP READING IF YOU HAVENT SEEN IT!
Anyway, a few thoughts.
1. This was the most surprising Star Wars yet. The lines have been blurred between good and bad, light and dark. For example previous episodes would have had Poe Damoran as a squeaky clean (if benevolently roguish) however in this episode he’s much more complex and I think he needed taking down a peg or two which he was. This allowed him to mature enough to take over the Resistance Fleet.
2. Kylo and Rey. The lines are blurred again. There are flashes/teases of both turning. Kylo refuses to pull the trigger to blow up Leia. There is still conflict in him. In a mirror image Rey too has a darkness that terrifies Luke.
3. Oh my God Luke. In many ways his arc is a microcosm of the whole trilogy so far. There is enough nostalgia and harking back to the original trilogy but it doesn’t feel forced; it’s tasteful and takes unexpected turns. For example on the hideaway Jedi planet his X Wing is submerged in the sea. Was he going to show Rey he could lift it like Yoda showed him in Empire Strikes Back? No! But there was a colossal pay-off at the end when Rey lifted the rocks to let the Resistance escape the base in which they were cornered. I loved that moment.
4. This was such a brave departure from the formula at the same time as drawing from its traditions. Just enough of the old was in this and the fate of the galaxy is firmly in the next generation. Director Rian Johnson has done an amazing job investing us in the new characters such as Rey, Kylo, Damoran and Finn. Luke’s absolutely awesome trick of Force Projection (is that a thing now?) at the end was a tremendous sacrifice of effort from him and whilst it was extremely, extremely cool did JUST ENOUGH to allow the Resistance to escape. It’s up to them now.
5. The LIGHTSPEED KAMIKAZE MOMENT. My jaw quite literally dropped. It was spectacular, bold, stunning, amazing, unique and breathtaking. I don’t know how they’ll top this. Even though I believe it should have been Admiral Akbar to do it rather than the annoying and unnecessary Vice Admiral Holdo this was still my favourite moment of the movie.
I’m still on a high and will need to see it at least another couple of time. Right now though I think this might actually be my favourite instalment. What did you guys think?
