Holy Trainer Review Experience
We purchased the HT for use when traveling when it was not possible to use our Steelworxx cage. Being made of a biosourced resin we thought it would be ideal to get past those pesky airport scanners.
Available in four finishes (black/white/pink/clear) we went for the pink one.
With the larger tube we found getting the whole thing fitted to be relatively easy and a lot simpler than the CB6000. The way the tube and back ring fit together (a sort of dovetail arrangement) is a nice neat solution and the locking bar is well protected. A big plus was that we experienced very little pinching of the skin when fitting the tube to the back ring.
We ordered a medium and large larger back ring and quickly found that the medium one (45mm classic) did not work for us. However, once we had the correct ring size (50mm)we found the back ring to be nicely shaped and comfortable to wear both day and night.
Once the cage is in place and its temperature has reached body temperature, it was incredibly comfortable. The device becomes slightly soft, no where near the flexibility of the silicon cages so it can still effectively prevent stimulation of the err, contents.
Overall we loved the cage but and it’s a big but, we had an issue. The Trainer had been in use for about 5 weeks ‘24/7’ when we had a failure of the part of the locking mechanism. On reporting this and sending a photograph to Novamédia, Martine there quickly arranged for a replacement tube to be sent. We cannot fault their customer service or speed of response. On receipt of the replacement tube, which was a slightly different colour (not a major issue for us) we refitted the Trainer. On waking the following morning (12hhours later?) we found I was free again due to the locking mechanism failing in exactly the same place.
A friend of mine who is a materials engineer has looked at both tubes is of the opinion that the dovetail location feature is a very good idea but the fit (certainly on mine) is not good enough to prevent stresses being placed directly onto the locking mechanism. Because of this movement there was an induced fatigue crack associated with the stress concentrations in the material of the squared key way. When the bottom the key way failed, the material making up the rounded key way followed.
We sent a copy of the photo that accompanies this review and our friend comments to Novamédia on the 17/7/14. We also included the following, ‘We found the overall design of the cage to be very effective and comfortable but unless there are changes in the design and/or materials used in this area of the cage [lock housing] we do not think it worth a third try’. Although asked for a third tube not to be sent, we have not had a reply to this email with any response to our comments as of today (25/7/14).
