Most punishment i believe goes with the persons imagination. For me, something like beeing made to do the gardening is punishment because i despise gardening!!! But if you mean sexually, it could be something such as beeing forced to clear up your own cum for example.

I like this website, Slave Training, it has a very sensible, logical and coherent approach to both discipline and punishment.
I had another quick search on the internet and couldn't believe what rubbish surfaced... a sensible attitude when it comes to discipline and punishment is a must!

As far as books are concerned, I'm a little rusty and will be doing a reread and review shortly, but the Topping Book, Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns, The Art of Sensual Female Dominance... I believe these all have sections on punishments.
And pet is right, punishments are very individualistic, some slaves adore pain and are very difficult to punish through spanking, caning, etc.

I think its a good buy in terms of introducing chastity and helping her find her feet as a Keyholder, but not necessarily in terms of a Domme with respect to punishment and discipline.
Its a book every Keyholder should own, but doesn't encompass everything that could be learned... but then what book does!?

One person's idea of punishment is another's idea of a reward. While all of the books mentioned above provide guidance and advice about how to implement assorted punishments not many of them detail the methods to reach agreement between slave and Mistress on the types of punishments.
While ideas and concepts presented in how-to books can be compelling this topic is best left to plenty of discussion and consideration by Mistress and slave. From my own experience my concepts of punishment (spank me! spank me!) were far off from Mistress' concepts of punishment. (massage her aching feet while watching an episode of Grey's Anatomy with her). oh the horror!
It takes alot of talk as well as trial and error to find punishment methods that satisfy the Mistress while meeting the desire of the slave to feel at the mercy of his Mistress.

Punishment is something that comes from the mind of the Mistress. Books will give you general ideas and tell you how others have done it. A Mistress and slave must talk about this and find what is acceptable. For me another week or two before release or wearing a large butt plug all day is punishment.
I agree that punishment is something that the Domme needs to decide for herself, but if she is new to BDSM she may benefit greatly by having a list of punishment ideas to choose from. Having introduced several women to BDSM fun it's been my experience that most of them found great comfort in having a list to refer to versus being expected to create and/or implement something safe, effective and successful, and in a field in which they have little or no knowledge or experience.
I strongly encourage the participants to discuss together the activities on any punishment list, as some things may be quite dangerous to the punishee, unbeknownst to the punisher. Also, some things may be equally dangerous when implemented by an inexperienced punisher.
So, towards that end I can highly recommend the list found at the link below. The list there has been around the web for years and has been added to now and then. I suspect no one knows who the original author is at this point.

my Mistress usually personally finds fitting punishments for when i am in need of one, but sometimes She has me create my own (Mistress still has to approve them).
i have some common punishments for disobedience; e.g. wearing a ball gag for talking without being spoken to first, or for not addressing Mistress by Her proper title.
On several occasions, my obedience levels are never a problem after being treated to my 'Punishment Plug.' It is a Large Doc Johnson buttplug. Its comfortable to wear, but because it is unvented, but leads to cramping eventually- which is why Mistress fills me with it and then sends me off to work.
my most recent humiliating punishment was when Mistress sent me into town to pick up a few items at the local grocery. Mistress Mel gave me a decent sized (1 quart) enema and gave me a very large buttplug to hold it in (3' diameter). In addition, i wore my posture collar and tight fitting girl's bluejeans, which showed the outline of my harness underneath.
While being followed by Mistress every step of the way, i stumbled through the store. i was humiliated every second. i kept getting weird looks, and two Gothic girls, probably in their mid 20's, approached me and asked if i was wearing a buttplug. Mistress overheard this and came over and had me explain that i was Her slave and then describe my punishment. The two girls had wide open mouths in awe before laughing at me and walking away.
my obedience level has not been an issue since.
