I got two HT-like cages and one of them has such an appalling risk built into it that I had to put together a one-pager for it. In aerospace parlance this risk would be considered critical: one that could result in serious injury.

The risk is having the usual three-buck brass cabinet-type lock completely buried in stainless steel, accessible only through the keyhole or a small alignment hole. That lock is going to require drilling out for most of its length in order to separate the halves of the cage.

How much do you want to bet that a three-dollar mechanism will work the next time?

Please, have a good and critical look at anything you own that relies for your well-being on these locks, and understand what you'll do if keys get lost or stolen, or the lock breaks.

More seriously, you are right the locks are poor. I suspect the lock could be forced just with a screwdriver and maybe some grips to add torque. How much shear force can the pins realisticly take ?
Regardless anytime you play there are risks. Sure it could break. Worst case senario you have a very embarrassing trip to the hospital or firestation. More likely a trip to the hardware store. Im in a cage 24/7 anyway so having to wait an extra bit of time to remove it, isnt a big deal.
My partner and i once lost the handcuff keys, that was a fun night.

For many an external mini lock is too easy to cut. Some people are looking for the inescapable (or very difficult ). That being said I don’t trust the little brass internal locks. My real problem with the “dangerous device” is its so darn heavy :-( I have one and found it hard to wear long because of that. Given that I have put my penis in a drill press to remove a device I can tell you that anything is escapable. Somethings just take a bit more than others.

Given that most ball trap devices are escapable, is it really that dangerous?

Agree, not that big of a risk.
Worst thing that can happen is that u can not open it, no damage.

As said escape would be easy.

The Rigid Chastity devices are like that. Oil the lock occasionally to keep it sweet.

You take a chance getting up in the morning, crossing the street, or sticking your face in a fan.

If you are worried about the tiny brass mortise locks, buy a German made one for $26. BTW, there is not a cage out there that I couldn’t remove in 10 minutes or less with a dremmel cut-off disc.

Hmm that almost sounds like a challenge... I could beef up one of my titanium creations :)

True, but the brass used for the cheaper locks that are likely to break, is so soft you could probably drill it out with a hand drill using a wood bit.
Not the same risk as having a titanium lock.

Those chinese locks also only have 1 pin so they're extremely easy to pick, especially if you have a conveniently exposed part to apply tension to.
Took not even 5 seconds to open on my first try. I even have one where the pin rests at the shear line. Because of that exposed tab, I can remove the lock with my fingernail
