From my point of view - especially in the beginning it is a lot of trial and error. There are a lot of guides on how to measure, but I would advise to get a used model of the CB- series. Thedevices are crap hemselfes, but come with a lot of options with a-rings and spacers so you can experiment untill you have a rough understand on what works best.
I think the main reason you’re getting ‘blue balls’ is probably because the ring on your chastity cage is too small, which could be cutting off circulation. A lot of newer cages now come with curved rings that give your balls and the nerves down there more room, so you don’t have to worry about blood flow getting restricted. I have been wearing all types of chastity cages for 15 years. Didn't you read about ring sizes? Use a ring that is tight enough so that you can slip a finger tip under it. Blue balls is more a myth than reality. If you buy a cheap cage from Amazon or similar with a limited selection of rings or you do not follow instructions on how to measure, you will have problems. A proper ring size is critical to comfort. Never had "blue balls". That is something we used to tell girls to get them to make us cum.
Flat cages are not advisable and the more reputable vendors do not sell them as there has been no study as to if they are harmful or not. Do what I do and use a very small cage instead or one that fits your flaccid penis. You seem to be doing everything wrong and like many others will give it up due to not doing it properly. So ring should be tight enough to get a finger tip under it. Cage should be as long as your flaccid penis. Use lots of lube. I recommend silicon lube as it lasts long and is very slick. I never had a problem with any of my 15 cages because I sized them correctly and did not try to imitate what I saw in porn.
My cheapest cage is over a hundred dollars. Made of resin so very light weight. The cage is as long as my flacid penis so that it almost touches the end of the cage. I can slip a fingertip under the ring and most times I forget I am wearing it.
Do not use a flat cage as no one knows if they are safe. Probably safe for short term use but in speaking to some manufacturers who do not sell them I was told that they want to avoid any legal action should a flat cage prove harmful as there is not a lot of information on long term use of flat cages.
I have had so many chastity devices and the ring size is always my problem. I am 8.5” around my penis and balls. The only thing that actually works is a handcuff. I can lock a handcuff on then lock the handcuff to my Kali’s Teeth Chastity. This works perfect. I thought these was a chastity that incorporates a hand cuff.
