In the summer I swim every morning in an unheated pool. I can't get down to 3.7C, but so long as the temperature is around 10C I'm OK. I can swim in my full belt, but I am normally let out briefly. I can wear a ball trap device if I'm sure I can keep warm, but I would not dare to get cold and certainly not swim in cold water. A nice heavy, tight fitting, full belt gives a very special feeling of total helplessness, particularly if it has a crotch bar, but a ball trapper is much more convenient. I wish I had the answer.
You should be ok swimming in your cage. Just note the cage might be much more obvious with a wet swimsuit.
I swim and ski wearing a cage in cold water often. Typically 10C or more, but once or twice down to 5C. I don't think the balls retract with any more force at 5C than 10C.
My personal experience was that as small a gap as I can tolerate without pinching works best in cold water. I have a lot of skin and require at least 9mm gap at narrowest, but if the largest gap is bigger than 15mm (your numbers might be different) a testicle will try to work its way through, which is much more painful than the simple retraction force. And I haven't had success with plastic cages in cold water because the gap opens up when the testicle tries to wedge its way in. Decent lube also helps since there is a lot of friction as things try to retract that much.
In short, if your gap is, or can become, big enough to let a testicle start wedging its way in, you might be in for a very unpleasant swim. You should be fine if it is quite tight.
