An interesting philosophical question came up on my Tumblr, and @Jay Sub asked me about it:

    My response:

So, again, I get what the original question was getting at. Skin cells, nevrve endings, bone marrow, digestive bacteria, all that "replaced" every seven years. I have been locked for five. Will I be a virgin in two more?

I have an answer, but I thought I'd open this for discussion. :)

Alan watts said the same about replacing the atoms in a wedding ring, one by one...at what point does it cease to be the same ring and become a brand new ring?

Many cultures believe in a soul, so with that in mind, you cannot be a virgin again since you are just a soul in a meat suit. The suit doesn't matter.

Since losing your virginity was an experience, as you moved from virgin to not virgin, you cannot experience that again, any more than you can experience the same fart twice.

Ultimately, though, there is no such thing in nature as a Tom or a virgin, so the question is nonsense.

However, should you wait for another two year and get the chance to grace the holy celestial palace with your jade stem I am certain you'll behave just as your former virgin self :p

This also reminds me of George Washington's axe. He replaced the handle three times and the head twice. Is it the same axe?

I have a bicycle where NONE of the original bike exists. Even the frame. Everything was replaced one component at a time.

The software/firmwear of my brain hasn't been replaced.......

you can easily guess my answer.

Hah! I bought a 1980s vintage steel bike at a tag sale, and have replaced everything but the frame. But yeah, I get what you mean.

This may help. Now need to look at shortest cell lifespans.

But agreement on muscles. So the half-life of a penis (excluding the skin) is 7.5 years. So after 15 years there is not one cell of your penis left from the original. So at 52 I'm on my 4th penis. Have to say the 2nd and 3rd got more action.

Other evidence suggests the heart maybe 3 years or less

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/ar...y high rates imply,be replaced within 3 weeks

    To summarise:
So we can probably, for now say, that philosophically speaking we can talk about having the same mind, or soul if you prefer, from the long lifespan of neurons, but the non neuron parts of you are pretty much expendable, when it comes to cell on cell action.

As it happens, I've heard of the show, and I'm familiar with Bromptons. I even stopped in at a shop when I visited London.

I'm pretty certain that is exactly how it works. Unless you would care to explain further:

In case of body cells we dont speak of half life like in atoms or radiation.

It is the turn over rate or time. It is the time it needs to replace all of its components.

Skincells ( skind is divided in several layers) have the shortest turn over rate with about a week on the epidermis.
The lower tissues take longer to refresh.

Cartilage needs the longest to be replaced. About 300 years.

I am not sure, if these are only the cells or also the surrounding tissue, which is built of proteins. And other stuff.

Half life works as an analogy though, right? Whether it it the correct biological term or not. If it takes 15 years for all the muscle cells in your penis to replace themselves with copies then it's 7 years for half of them 10.5 years and 3/4 of them are replaced.

The original meme that you are replaced in 7 years is an average and has been misquoted for years. Before the Tumblr post I was under the impression that there was nothing longer than 10 years. So it's all new and interesting. Might have to ask cousin Dr.

Great you could learn again something new on this site.

Please ask your cousin Dr. about the time a penis takes to be replaced completely. Especially the skin, nerves.

I've started the conversation. And will definitely ask specifically about the penis, it will amuse him greatly.

    Texted:

Interesting conversation I'm having about cell lifespan. The meme is that in 10 years there is nothing left of the original you. Looking into it, that seems to be an average. Which of our cell types do not get replaced and are with us for a lifetime?

How much, and what is with us after 10 years, or 15

So the big (or small lol) question is... What about penises? How long before every cell in the penis is replaced? Would someone become a technical virgin after a certain time? Don't worry cuz, we're good. Coming up on our 25th anniversary

Forgive the glibness, but my wife could replace my penis in 60 seconds.....open the drawer....out comes a new, larger penis.
